Joyce Wuesthoff Povolny was born on December 23, 1929, in

Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her father was a businessman. She was

educated for secondary school at a private school and then went

on to Connecticut College for Women for a BA and to Haverford

Quaker College, Philadelphia for an MA. She worked for the

American Friends Service Committee in Philadelphia and then

went to Japan with her husband Mojmir Povolny in 1956 to work

in the work camp program in Tokyo. They then went to Chicago

where she joined the the Evanston Meeting of Friends in 1958. From

there they went to Appleton, Wisconsin, where her husband taught

for 29 years at Lawrence University. They have two sons, David

and Daniel. She has been active all her life in the League of Women

Voters and various charitable organizations.   She gave of her time

volunteering with the small charitable agency called Leaven.
